A Second-Hand Book Marketplace in an Age of e-Readers
There are a lot of people out there who truly love reading stories, they capture our imaginations and hearts and transport us to different worlds. Of those people, a large percentage has moved from reading their stories on printed paper to reading them on a tablet, e-reader, or other screen.
This is especially convenient because a lot of books are now available online, which makes it possible to read a book without having to search for a physical copy of the book, a frustrating process sometimes. The convenience and accessibility of online reading material has not captured everybody, however.
There are still people who prefer to read a physical book that they can hold in their hands and display on a bookshelf. Thriftbooks was created to serve this group of people, those who want a physical copy of a book and thrill in the search for it.
ThriftBooks is a company that stores books, both new and old in facilities across the United States and sells those books online. It was started in 2003 by Daryl Butcher and Jason Meyer.
The first warehouse was in Seattle and it later moved to Auburn. Today, ThriftBooks has warehouses in Baltimore, Reno, Dallas, Phoenix, Portland and the largest in Chicago. The company employs about 900 people and it now enjoys worldwide patronage.
The Founders Were Inspired By The Power of Reading.
The founders were inspired by the potential of books to empower people and improve lives.
The founders were also inspired by a need to protect the environment and reduce the number of books that are thrown out every year.
On this account, the company collects old books facing the threat of destruction and restores them, if need be. These books are then listed on their online catalogues and sold.
Condition Grades For Used Books:
Every used book is different, so what Thriftbooks has started doing is grading their books on a scale so that online purchasers can get an idea of what condition the book is in:
New: A brand-new, never owned and never read copy of a book.
Like New: A new book with no scratches, marks or folds. Spine is intact.
Very Good: A copy that’s been read, but is still in excellent condition.
Good: The copy has been read, may have a little bit of highlighting/marking, and the spine has been cracked.
Acceptable: A previously-read copy that has previous owners’ notes, highlights. All pages & cover is in intact.
